Overview

Teaching at the university is unique because the professors who try to pass their knowledge on are also the ones involved in producing the knowledge. Being aware of how some knowledge was acquired or how a theory came to be really changes the way a researcher will present it to students: pointing out the solidity or fragility of conclusions, specifying the scope of validity of a theory, how it was inferred from measurements and how precisely it describes observations, are all things one will never do as well when teaching from a book as compared to teaching from first hand experience with the subject. Long story short: as most of my colleagues, I teach my specialty, hydrodynamics, and that is what I am best at. I try to help students become good experimentalists by coaching their experimental projects. I do also teach, or have taught in the past, subjects such as numerical methods for physicists or signal processing which correspond to tools I use in my research more than being primary research topics of mine.
